El Barrio
The Gentrification of Barrio Logan
Our project seeks to expose why gentrification hurts communities of color, more specifically the community of Barrio Logan. Gentrification happens when wealthier, often white, people move into an existing urban community. Its effects often increase in rent prices, and change in the community’s culture and character.
To us, Barrio Logan conjures breathtaking murals, community activism, memorable figures, oldies music, and an overall significant culture. The new businesses, coffee shops and apartment complexes created for a culture that is not our own takes away from this valuable history. Many new residents do not know Barrio Logan’s history. Our neighborhood is now described as “up-and-coming”, a term solely used by people outside of our community.
This does not mean we do not want to show what Barrio Logan has to offer. We just ask for respect and knowledge and for our cultural history to be preserved.
We made this movie presentation by visiting Barrio Logan and taking photographs and videos of the people, busy streets, art galleries, coffee shops, restaurants, and housing complexes. With this project, we hope to demonstrate how beautiful of a culture Barrio Logan has with its rich history.
The existing culture of Barrio Logan should be appreciated and not overlooked.
