Humans as Invasive Species

San Diego, one of the busiest cities in California, is a part of a dangerous trend that harms the environment it is built upon. By continuing to develop and expand, the city destroys land and other natural resources for buildings and businesses. San Diego is one of the many cities that is making a negative footprint on the world each day leaving little to no space for local species, making mankind one of the most devastating invasive species on earth.
We chose La Mesa as our trolley stop because it was an empty suburb and European and American settlers saw no harm in building there because they saw it as an empty desert, when in reality there was still life there. Once the settlers moved in, they harmed the integrity of the soil.
Our podcast shows the effects humans had on the environment of La Mesa and the the voices of people who live there today on how they feel about the environment and the community of La Mesa.
We use the word “invasive” as a metaphor because we hope to educate people on plants and their behavior as well by making a personal connection in the way they act. For example these invasive plants take away important resources from the earth for themselves causing the native species population to rapidly decline, like humans.
We hope to shed light on the way humans have used the earth without thinking of the consequences on future generations, and hope that people will also consider the planet when they act. We also wish to educate our audience a little on plants and how to care for them in our environment.
