OUR TROLLEY LINE
Development and Gentrification in Downtown San Diego
The cultural demographics in East Village, Downtown, San Diego are rapidly changing due to development, which is unfortunately displacing the homeless population.
In our project, we took a deeper look into each of our interests: social justice and development which gave us two views to work with while exploring East Village with an open eye.
Our project focuses on recent development in East Village and how it is affecting the neighborhood's culture, businesses, and residents, including its homeless population. We open our project with images that illustrate the differences between what East Village used to be, and what it is evolving to. We then show a handcrafted, magazine article that gives a detailed explanation of the renovations happening in the area. We conducted two interviews that give a first hand look into the experiences of those renovations in an everyday life.
We decided to undertake this project because we wanted to take a deeper look into what was happening in our city.
Our inspiration and influences for this project come from our passions in our everyday lives. Our views on this issue are thoroughly shown in these photos.
The slide show illustrates our view on gentrification in East Village visually, and the article shares multiple views on the development through words. Hopefully, our project will influence others to open their eyes and take a deeper look into real world problems such as gentrification, which is often overlooked.
