San Diego’s History and its Effects on Santee
In this project, we explored Redlining in San Diego and how it influenced the demographics of Santee. We first investigated the history of San Diego and its metropolitan transit. After deciding to explore Santee, the last stop on the greenline, we became interested in the areas wealth and lack of diversity. We wondered why Santee has a wealthy transit station. This lead us to explore the area and its demographics.
Santee currently has a lack of diversity in its population and is composed by a majority of white residents. After exploring Santee’s history, we concluded that Santee’s wealth is shaped by San Diego’s segregation and history of redlining (denying loans or housing to people of color in order the segregate the population).
Through this podcast, we hope to shine a light on redlining in San Diego and how the wealth of neighborhoods like Santee were shaped. Along with our podcast we included pictures of the area to give a feel of what it is like to be in this area.
